Hi there,

India is a nation with various cultures and traditions. It is the land of the Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads. And is home to many mysteries, ethics, and morals.
The diversity of this region is fascinating for anyone who visits the Indian Subcontinent. One of the unavoidable topics of discussion in this part of the world is Indian cuisine-when there are any discussions regarding the food or eating habits of Indians. One aspect is always discussed and debated widely—the old way of eating food with one’s hands.
Having a meal using our hands is the most basic and natural habit. After all, there was a time in human history when spoons and forks or any other form of cutlery did not exist. The primitive humans used their hands for eating and large leaves as plates. Fast forward to the current century; different cutleries have replaced this technique- sighting them as easy, fast, and clean. Having separate spoons and plates for different types of dishes has become a common sight in most places. The traditional way has been stamped as unclean and unacceptable in a civilized society.

Eating with our fingers- An Experience.

Well, let me confess. I, too, was a cutlery fan till a couple of years back. My family and I  visited an ashram about four years ago. The residents requested us to share their humble meal. Their hospitality touched our hearts. And we agreed to do so.  The food – a simple spread of dal, rice, chapati, and a vegetable. We took our seats on the mats placed on the floor. And then they served the food to us.

I looked around to see my family members enjoying their meal. As for me, I could not fathom having dal (lentil soup) with my hands. They provided no Spoon. I did not want to waste food as the sentiments of the ashram residents would be hurt.

Thankfully I was next to my Mother. I nudged her and whispered, ”How am I suppose to have dal? I need a spoon!!” She shushed me and showed me the trick of enjoying food with my hands.

I am sharing this anecdote to prove that our rush to appear ”modern”, ”sophisticated” and  ”uber-cool” has made us leave our traditions.  This is scientific and proven.

THE 5 ELEMENTS

Eating with hands-5 elements

Did you all know that eating with your hands has immense benefits and positives attached to it?

According to the ancient texts, we constitute the five elements-namely Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Space. But, the most crucial factor is that our fingers signify each of these elements. So, when we consume food using our hands, it transforms the bite into a source that satiates the stomach and the mind.

Cooking and eating are very personal as one cannot avoid contact with a food item. Whether it is making dough for chapattis or flatbreads or eating rice mixed with curries, one cannot get away without using their hands. In certain parts of India, especially in the southern or eastern parts of the country, eating with hands is a mandatory, everyday ritual.

Another significant but mostly unknown benefit is that our fingers contain some good bacteria. When swallowed, it improves our digestion and protects us from the harmful bacteria present in the environment. This way of eating also makes us conscious of the quantity consumed and aids in easy digestion.
Various other cultures across the globe also propagate this ancient style of eating. Latest studies and experiments are coming up with statistics that demonstrate a section of society has begun to embrace eating with hands. The world is waking up to its benefits.
