Hi there,
Social Sustainability-This segment deals with the last Pillar of Sustainability.
Let’s dive in,
Sustainability is a qualitative idea-i.e., not measurable in units or numbers. It is an all-inclusive package. I have already expanded upon the first two pillars-Economic, and Environmental.
This segment focuses on the last one, which is the least discussed and most underrated- Social Sustainability. But in all actuality, to continue life on this beautiful planet-it is vital for us.
The foundation stone on which the three pillars of Sustainability stand is preserving the world’s Natural Capital (forests, minerals, birds, animals, etc.).
If only it were that simple.
However, I am humbly attempting to explain these concepts in my previous and subsequent blog posts.
So, moving on,
Social Sustainability
In simple terms, when society works toward its well-being and that of the future generations to come, such a society is called Socially Sustainable. It is utilizing the income of the Natural Capital to fulfill its’ requirements. And leaving the non-renewable resources for future civilizations to flourish.
I’m sure you will have tons of questions. Right? My mind, too, had become a questionnaire!!!
Let me dwell on this… It won’t take too long…🤔
The main aim of any community is welfare, growth, and development. And globally, there are innumerable communities, cultures, and societies that mutually coexist.
To create a flourishing society, the economic growth of every individual is vital. But, at the same time, environmental factors such as the availability of abundant natural produce (like fruits and vegetables), clean air and water, must be reachable to all members of the society. When this happens in all the existing communities- there is progress on a global scale. And the world moves towards being Socially Sustainable. And inches towards the final goal of Sustainable Living.
Various Societal aspects contribute towards a better Community. Here is a small list of a few of them
- better healthcare
- education,
- clean and hygienic places to live,
- equal distribution of food products,
- pure water to drink and
- pollution-free air to breathe in, etc.
Apart from these essential requisites, it is imperative to ensure the growth of eco-friendly products, green buildings, and environment-friendly infrastructure. Also, a drastic reduction in the use of fossil fuels is essential. Simultaneously, an increase in the use of renewable sources of energy like wind, air, and the sun will aid in achieving the final goal at a better place.
But the most vital aspect for achieving social sustainability is – to make sure that every individual has access to the facilities mentioned above for their upkeep. These steps will make the world a better place to live.
It seems like a dream.
I am trying to paint an idealistic picture here. But I strongly believe that it is possible if we all try and jump into it together.
How easily can they be implemented?
That’s something that will depend on the execution of the concrete steps.
These points and many more fall under the vast periphery of Social Sustainability.
I am aiming to write about them with you in my subsequent blog posts. Stay tuned…
As I have been consistently repeating, following these steps will ultimately lead to healthier and better societies. But will ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the wonders of this Planet.
Who shoulders these responsibilities regarding Social Sustainability?
The onus falls on the Governments- local, state, and national. And this applies to not one but all the countries in the entire world. Governments are responsible for devising numerous policies which aid in improving societal conditions. Proactive steps to ensure Socially Sustainable Companies have to be undertaken by people in positions of power.
Also, large corporates, small and medium businesses have a duty towards formulating a socially sustainable society. Inasmuch, the companies providing goods and services play an equally important role. Therefore, it has become compulsory for companies to watch the products and services presented before the masses because their offerings have a positive or negative consequence on communities in general.
The corporate giants and Governments forcefully work in tandem to work towards these goals.
Apart from Governments, corporates, and organizations, every member of society must build a Social Sustainable world.
Social Sustainability- has the Awareness increased?
In the same breath, I would also like to point out that certain sections are waking up and realizing that the benefits mentioned above are every human’s right. These sections are working towards providing liveable conditions, clean drinking water, etc., to the impoverished.
They are also becoming aware of the perils of the unplanned and rapid destruction of Earth’s limited resources. And as time is passing, individuals and groups from across the world are raising voices of concern. By doing so, these organizations are making others alert of the reality of climate change and the deterioration of Earth.
Overall, there has been an increase in attentiveness regarding the issues and inequality faced by millions.
All in all, the concept of being a Socially responsible organization has risen in recent years. And, ideas revolving around returning something to society have been gaining steam too.
Social Sustainability- Factors summarized
The following are the requisites of a Socially Sustainable Society, as per Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen:
I am attempting to explain these factors in a few words as per my understanding.
Equality –
Simply speaking, social equity is one of the critical factors of Social Sustainability. Theoretically speaking, when every individual gets the same rights and opportunities to grow. When there is no discrimination based on gender and caste, equality implies a fair society or community.
Quality of Life-
When there is a fulfillment of aspirations, desires, and needs requiring to live a comfortable and satisfying life. For social sustainability, it is imperative that the basic requirements, like food, clothing, and shelter, are made available for all. Therefore, quality or Standard of living is assuming increasing importance. It also involves improving the StandardStandard of living at the different stages of the supply chain.
Diversity:
People are different from each other in every respect. Be it their demographics, location, gender, or culture. The idea behind a socially sustainable society is to encourage the exchange of such different thought processes, which will lead to an overall improvement in society. And also lead to tolerance amongst individuals and communities.
Social Cohesion:
this term implies the level of connectedness and a sense of belonging amongst individuals and communities on the whole-that will eventually lead to a society that will be free and efficient. There will be equal distribution of resources.
In totality, communities do realize the requirement of bringing about an overall upliftment of society. In recent times, various world bodies, organizations are urging nations and individuals to take steps to achieve this dream.
Conclusion
In conclusion, one thing is sure- a free and fair society is the prerequisite for growth and development. Establishing a conscious culture that believes in the values described above is imperative to attain social sustainability. If communities comply with these rules, there will be efficient utilization of natural resources. Also, companies will provide benefits throughout the supply chain, leading to the upliftment of the marginalized or underprivileged sections of society.
All in all, the least discussed Pillar of Sustainability is one of the most vital. And crucial for the survival of the Planet.
