I’m sure you must have guessed it by now. But if you haven’t?
The answer is – GUAVA.
Yes, this blog post speaks about a fruit loved and enjoyed by all the fruitaholics the world over.
Did you know that Guava is not an Indian fruit?
Although the exact origin is unknown, research suggests that the Guava was first cultivated in Peru, South America. After that, the fruit traveled to America, as far as Mexico, and even to the Caribbean Islands.
Just going a bit off track- the world should be grateful to South America for it is the source of some of the most consumed fruits and vegetables.
Finally, the exotic fruit came to the forefront for the Europeans in present-day Haiti. And then the GUAYABA traveled the world through the Portuguese and Spanish traders.
The Portuguese once again can be credited (they were the first to bring Potatoes into our lives) with introducing Indians to this delicious fruit. And the 17th century saw the fruit establish its hold in India, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
A bit about the Guava Tree
The Guava tree takes about two to eight years to become fruit-laden. And on average, it can survive up to forty years. The flower is white, with five petals, and has numerous stamens. As for the fruit- it is filled with multiple edible seeds.
Guava and India
Though it is not a native of India, the country is considered the number one Guava producing nation. And exports to USA, Netherlands, UAE, South Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana are responsible for the majority of the production.
There are close to thirty varieties available in the country, with the most famous being the Allahabad Safeda. The skin of the fruit is very light, and the flesh is white. Everyone widely enjoys it due to its nearly seedless nature.
Don’t you love the Pink Guava? With light-yellow skin and pink flesh- this variety is often referred to as Lalit and grown extensively in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Guavas are superfoods.
